Speaking Strategies (Course Outline)
Second-language speakers of English working in an English speaking environment soon recognise that a hierarchy of status exists, in which those who speak well are automatically afforded more status and respect than those with less confidence.
People who speak fluently do so because they have worked on their speech. They have perfected the sounds of English and mastered the vocal parameters and are able to use these to their advantage, whether participating in a meeting or giving a presentation.
The Speaking Strategies programme introduces delegates to the sounds of English, and shows how these sounds are different to the sounds of various other mother tongues. Accent correction forms an essential part of voice training. By becoming familiar with the sounds that make up an English accent, one can vastly improve their confidence in speaking.
All languages have a distinct rhythm and stress pattern, which distinguishes them from other languages. English is no exception. The programme introduces delegates to the linguistic parameters of stress, articulation, intonation, pitch, intensity and inflection, and assists delegates in measuring their own speech against these parameters. By adapting ones speech according to a particular situation, one has the ability to make their voice work best for them!
Throughout the programme, delegates will be required to submit recordings of their speech for assessment and feedback. This ensures that progress is closely monitored, and evaluated by the delegates themselves.
