HIV/AIDS WORKSHOP OUTLINE

Presented by
Teressa M. Introduction

HIV/AIDS is most prevalent in adults in their productive prime. With prevalence rates over 20% in many sub-Saharan countries and with infections rising rapidly in many other regions, companies are increasingly finding that HIV/AIDS is affecting their operations. As a result, addressing HIV/AIDS in the workplace is becoming a priority for companies.

This workshop will offer delegates an opportunity to engage with the subject of HIV/AIDS in a participatory setting where open discussion is encouraged. it can be used as part of an HIV/AIDS response strategy within companies. Ideally a group size of 15 to 25 delegates is suitable – bigger groups require changes in the workshop structure.

The facilitation approach is based on participatory learning techniques. Group activities and personal reflection exercises are used to facilitate communication on the subject.

Workshop objectives
  • Provide accurate information about HIV/AIDS so that delegates are able to make informed decisions regarding their reproductive health
  • Challenge personal attitudes about HIV/AIDS and offer delegates an opportunity to measure how ‘at risk they are’
  • Explore company strategy and policy regarding HIV/AIDS

Workshop Agenda

09h00 am to 3h00pm

Part 3

Interactive lecture –A short presentation detailing how companies respond to HIV/AIDS in the workplace by exploring established strategies, legal obligation, and limits. Debrief discussion How well do you know your company’s policy Are you prepared for the consequences How are you protecting yourself

This session is best done with an existing company strategy as it provides an opportunity for delegates to understand specific arrangements for their company instead of a generalized understanding

Part 4

Mingle mingle game – this activity presents a direct challenge to each individual to examine their current sexual behavior to determine how at risk they are of contracting HIV. It highlights how easily the virus is spread by dismissing the idea that “ it could not happen to me”.

Debrief

Participants will be presented with an HIV risk profile to determine personal risk

This activity allows each person to face the reality of what the statistics mean at a personal level. This is useful to help individuals move from fear to understanding.
Open Discussion

Re –entry The workshop can be emotionally challenging for some delegates. The re-entry session is aimed at making sure that delegates are able to apply the knowledge gained responsibly.

Workshop closure

1 week before workshop is needed for preparation
