ENGLISH IMPROVEMENT (NQF LEVEL 4):

VOCABULARY AND COMPREHENSION

Both educationalists and researchers report that literacy levels and English competency are reducing rapidly. Problems that are aggravating this situation include the new OBE education system, lack of delivery by government departments, mismanagement of funds and fraud, an acute shortage of teachers and unmanageable numbers of learners in classrooms.
 
The problem with English then evidences in organisations as a lack of competency, unprofessionalism, a lack of productivity, conflict, time wasting, increased costs, etc. 
 
This two-day course will provide some assistance with the improvement of English used in the working environment. It focuses on vocabulary extension and comprehension of the English language. The course is a practical, participative course that is constructed around exercises carefully designed to ensure real learning by attendees. The workshop will help employees at all levels of the organisation to improve their level of competence with English. 
 
Course Outcomes

The course provides assistance with English improvement, specifically in the areas of English comprehension and vocabulary. Specific aspects dealt with include:

  • abbreviations, acronyms, business terms and concepts
  • jargon, slang, colloquialisms, neologisms, euphemisms
  • vocabulary correction, improvement and extension, dictionary usage
  • prefixes, suffixes
  • synonyms, antonyms
  • homonyms, homophones
  • spelling rules and problems
  • phraseology, including idiomatic expressions collocations, numbers, story attachment
Please note that this is not an ABET course. It is pitched at an NQF 4 home language level   and is therefore not suitable for those who have only a most basic or rudimentary understanding of the English language.

The course provides assistance with English improvement, specifically in the areas of English grammar and punctuation. Specific aspects dealt with include:

  • all punctuation
  • sentences: types, phrases, clauses, subject and predicate, single, compound and complex sentences
  • noun: noun, plurals, compounds words
  • pronoun:person, gender, case, number, problems, antecedents
  • adjectives
  • verbs: agreement, tenses, mood, finite and infinite, incorrect, active and passive voice, rule of concord
  • adverbs
  • conjunctions
  • prepositions
  • articles
